What is weather stripping on a car, exactly? It's simply a set of rubber and soft plastic slats, usually held in place by adhesive and a set of screws. It lines the edges of your car door and windows. Weather strips do two important things for a GM vehicle. One, they help seal dirt, moisture, and wind out of your cabin. Two, they help you close your car doors more quietly. Sooner or later, though, even OEM weather stripping can wear out. At that point, it's best to replace it. Luckily, figuring out when to do it is easy. While you drive, listen: can you hear air moving fast through your doors or windows? That's one symptom. Another is more telltale: water stains, whether on your upholstery, bare floor, or even your carpet floor mats. It suggests seepage. It's probably easiest to look for where your weather strips might have failed, though: channels where there's water, worn areas, or spots of cracking or brittleness. How you install new weather stripping on a car is just as uncomplicated. Just remove any screws, pull the stripping and adhesive away, clean and dry the stripping channel, and reapply fresh adhesive, pressing your weather stripping gently into the channel and aligning it properly. Put stronger pressure on it for a bit, then change any relevant screws, and you're done. Just be sure the pieces you use are the same type and length as before. Your best bet? Go with factory GM weather stripping. It'll be designed to fit your GM vehicle from the start, not to mention look better than the aftermarket. You can buy it online right from our auto parts store.
